Recognizing Human Trafficking Through a Trauma Informed Lens

Human trafficking remains one of the most pervasive yet underrecognized public health crises of our time. Despite frequent interactions with healthcare systems, many victims remain unidentified during routine clinical encounters. Dental professionals occupy a unique position within healthcare due to regular patient contact and the ability to observe physical, behavioral, and environmental indicators that may suggest exploitation. This course equips participants with practical knowledge to recognize potential trafficking indicators, understand trauma informed care principles, and respond appropriately within their professional scope. Through evidence based research, clinical observations, and real world case examples, attendees will develop greater confidence in identifying vulnerable patients and facilitating access to supportive resources.

Course Objectives: 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Define human trafficking using federally recognized terminology.
2. Differentiate between labor trafficking and sex trafficking.
3. Identify at least five indicators commonly associated with trafficking victims.
4. Describe trauma informed care principles applicable in healthcare settings.
5. Explain barriers that prevent victim disclosure.
6. Demonstrate appropriate communication strategies when trafficking is suspected.
7. Identify referral pathways and support resources available to potential victims.

Her work focuses on closing educational gaps that leave victims unseen despite repeated interactions with healthcare systems.
