Herbals in Dentistry

The use of herbal medicinal products has seen tremendous growth over the past two decades.  It is estimated that over 42% of Americans use some form of herbal supplement.  As your patients are using herbals what do you need to know of their side effects, interactions and implications for the dental treatment plan?

As more and more people look for alternatives to the wave of pharmaceuticals, herbal remedies are making a strong comeback.  The idea of no or minimal side effects and no interactions is explored to allow members of the oral health team to have a better understanding of herbal medicaments and their indications as well contraindications.

Objectives:  Participants will:

  • understand what herbal remedies are and obtain a historical background
  • explain how herbals can be used in the dental setting
  • relate common drug and herbal interactions

Speaker:  Tyrone Fernando Rodriguez, Sc.B., D.D.S., 

Dr. Rodriguez received his BS degree in Neuroscience from Brown University. Additional studies and degrees include a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Rice University; DDS from University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, and postgraduate Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  Dr. Rodriguez also achieved an AAPD-Samuel D. Harris Fellowship, Chicago, IL.  He is one of twelve dentists selected by the ADA to be a spokesperson on dental related topics.

Dr. Rodriguez’s work experience with children who have special needs is extensive and his ability to address this topic as an educator and clinician with expertise is the result of extensive and varied experience with diverse populations. His former positions as faculty at the University of Washington, Pediatric Director Northwest AEGD and Pediatric Director, Yale New Haven Hospital, CT.
