According to the department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2021, 24 million people were classified as having a drug use disorder.  An estimated 9.2 million people aged 12 or older misused opioids. This is an epidemic worsened by the CoVid 19 pandemic. This *interactive webinar presents information on America’s current opioid/controlled substance epidemic with an emphasis on the history, pharmacology and prescribing practices of opioid analgesics as well as other controlled substances from an adult as well as a pediatric standpoint.

Course Objectives: Participants will:

  • review the history behind opioid analgesics
  • understand the pharmacology of opioid analgesics
  • understand prescribing practices of opioid and other controlled substances
  • identify legal implications and safeguards regarding opioid analgesic and controlled substance prescriptions

Speaker:  Tyrone Fernando Rodriguez, Sc.B., D.D.S.
Dr. Rodriguez received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Neuroscience from Brown University. His further study includes a Masters of Arts in Teaching Program, Rice University; Doctor of Dental Surgery, University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, and postgraduate Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Dr. Rodriguez is one of twelve dentists selected by the ADA to be a spokesperson on dental related topics.  He also achieved an AAPD-Samuel D. Harris Fellowship, Chicago, IL.  His career positions include former faculty at the University of Washington, former Pediatric Director Northwest AEGD and former Pediatric Director, Yale New Haven Hospital.

Dr. Rodriguez’s work experience with children who have special needs is extensive and his ability to address this topic as an educator and clinician with expertise is the result of extensive and varied experience with diverse populations.
