Description

In today’s information-saturated world, many patients turn to over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, home remedies, and even unregulated substances to manage their own health, including dental pain and anxiety. This course examines the growing trend of patient self-medication and its significant implications for oral healthcare. Dentists and dental hygienists will learn to identify self-medication behaviors, recognize potential risks and interactions, and engage patients in nonjudgmental, informed discussion. Emphasis is placed on specific currently controversial agents such as GLP-1/GIP agonists (like semaglutide), “novel” opioids (such as nitazenes), OTC drugs with potentially serious side effects (such as acetaminophen) and hallucinogens (including cannabis) as well as pharmacologic literacy, medical history assessment, and strategies to ensure safe, effective, and ethical dental care in a self-directed health culture.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify prescription and OTC drugs, dietary supplements, and unregulated substances patients use to self-medicate
  • Recognize signs and risks of self-medication, including drug interactions, masking of symptoms, delayed diagnosis, and adverse oral effects
  • Evaluate potential interactions between self-administered substances and dental medications or procedures
  • Interpret patient medical histories more accurately by asking targeted questions about non-prescription and alternative therapies
