Description

This 90-minute continuing education course provides an in-depth, case-based exploration of periodontal staging, grading, and treatment planning in patients with advanced periodontitis. Participants will review four complex clinical cases that progress through structured case presentation, diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment planning. Emphasis is placed on clinical decision-making, sequencing of care, prognosis determination, interdisciplinary considerations, and identification of ethical challenges and risk mitigation strategies. A foundational knowledge and practical application of periodontal staging and grading is required for successful participation in this course. 

Course Objectives: 

  • Apply advanced periodontal staging and grading principles to complex clinical presentations of periodontitis.
  • Develop comprehensive, evidence-based treatment plans for advanced periodontal cases, including appropriate sequencing and prognostic considerations.
  • Identify ethical considerations and risk mitigation strategies in periodontal treatment planning and implement strategies to reduce professional liability and improve patient outcomes.

Speaker: Katie Pudwill, RDH, BS, MS, PhD candidate is a clinical dental hygienist in South Dakota with the Department of Corrections. She is a dental hygiene educator at the University of South Dakota, and teaches Periodontics, Dental Anatomy, Oral Pathology, and Ethics and Jurisprudence. She has 15 years of clinical experience and 10 years of teaching experience.
