OSHA and Infection Control
Effective 10.1.16, All dentists, RDHs and CDA's are required to comply with the State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health mandate for infection control practices. This mandate must be repeated every monitoring period. Federal law requires an annual OSHA/Infection Control update.
Occupational Health and Safety training is mandatory for all employees working in healthcare settings. This presentation promotes insight for employees to understand potential risk and develop safety strategies essential to comply with OSHA and CDC guidelines.
There will be a discussion on the latest policies for record keeping and chemical safety. A description on what should be included in your office exposure control and post exposure plans will be included. Several new products will be introduced that assist with optimal infection control procedures as well as promote an eco-friendly environment.
Objectives: Upon completion, participants will:
- distinguish areas of potential injury in the workplace.Develop strategies to reduce the risk of injury and disease transmission according to OSHA and CDC guidelines.
- design and implement policies required for Exposure and Post Exposure Control Plans for their practice.
- review hazmat guidelines and how to implement them in a dental practice.

The HIPAA course will provide a basic comprehensive review of HIPAA guidelines and the 2013 HITECH rules for the dental healthcare provider. Particular emphasis will be given to policies and strategies necessary to meet compliance regulations.
Objectives: Upon completion of this program participants will:
- become familiar with the required strategies to meet HIPAA requirements
- identify and implement policies and forms to ensure HIPAA compliance
- identify and evaluate scenarios in which breaches can occur
- recognize the importance of team training and compliance
Cathie Collier, RDH, B.Ed, MS, received her bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the Fones School at the University of Bridgeport, where she later served as DH Clinical Coordinator. Her recent accomplishment earned her a master’s degree in Health and Healing. Cathie is a national lecturer and frequent speaker for PLS on topics of OSHA, HIPAA, Medical Emergencies and CPR. She is a clinical instructor at Goodwin College and Emergency Care Institute CPR Instructor at Bridgeport Hospital.
Cathie is a Core Instructor for PLS and frequently presents to dental offices and study clubs.
