Now more than ever, we live in an unpredictable world where sudden large-scale acts of violence can occur. In the first six months of 2022 over 300 mass shootings have taken place in our nation. The unfortunate reality is that being prepared is not optional. Still, a requirement for the dental team since an increasing amount of these public/workplace tragedies has taken place in hospitals or health clinics.

This course is an introductory overview to help begin the discussion and planning for your office response to better address the potential of violence at the workplace, and video simulations will be part of the 90 mins presentation.

 Objectives: 

The participant will understand:

1. how to identify triggers that contribute to violent attacks

2. what to look for in signs of distress and mental health issues amongst patients, staff, and providers

3. what actions are recommended based on an actual workplace attack

4. how the dental team could prepare and have a response plan

Presenter: Tyrone Fernando Rodriguez, Sc.B., DDS has a diverse education that includes a BS in Neuro-science from Brown University and a Masters of Arts in Teaching Program from Rice University. He  received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, and postgraduate Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  Dr. Rodriguez also achieved an AAPD Samuel D. Harris Fellowship, Chicago, IL.  

Dr. Rodriguez is the co-founder of the new Journal of the Hispanic Dental Association (JHDHA)

Dr. Rodriguez is one of twelve dentists selected by the ADA to be a spokesperson on dental related topics.  His career positions include former faculty at the University of Washington, former Pediatric Director Northwest AEGD and former Pediatric Director, YALE New Haven Hospital.
