Many states require a mandatory infection control course based on the dental setting, once in a license monitoring cycle. The federal government requires an annual OSHA/Infection control class. Check with your state for requirements and CE credit acceptance. This course also complies with New York's specific guidelines for this topic. All members of the Dental Team must be updated on this topic.

According to the ADA,  "The frequency of such training is up to the individual dental practice to determine, but training should be ongoing and timely, with updates, notices, and reminders issued in a manner that reduces risks associated with existing and newly identified threats.  An annual training session may or may not be appropriate, depending on your Security Official’s ongoing risk analysis and training objectives identified by your Privacy Official."

This presentation encompasses guidelines from OSHA, the CDC on Infection Control and Bloodborne Pathogens and raises awareness on the new respiratory disease transmission and prevention protocols and policies required for our profession. Training promotes insight for employers and employees to understand potential risk and develop safety strategies essential to comply current CDC guidelines which must now address prevention practices for COVID-19.

HIPAA Review and Update. “To share or not to share?… that is the question

According to the ADA, "All members of a covered entity’s workforce are required to receive training in the dental practice’s policies and procedures required under HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification. Train new workforce members within a reasonable time after they join the workforce. If someone’s job is affected by a change in your HIPAA policies or procedures, provide training on the change within a reasonable time after the change becomes effective. In addition, periodic re-training and training updates can help ensure compliance and reduce the likelihood of a breach". 

This presentation will provide information on HIPAA and the HITECH rules and regulations. Discussion includes HIPAA Privacy and Security Policies and raises awareness on the latest cyber attacks occurring in dental offices.

  • understand required strategies to meet HIPAA requirements
  • identify and implement policies and forms to ensure HIPAA compliance
  • identify and evaluate scenarios in which breaches can occur
  • recognize the importance of team training and compliance

Cathie is trained and certified in Occupational and Bloodborne Pathogens and lectures on this topic frequently. Through her 30 plus years as an educator she has presented programs for hygienists throughout the United States. She currently teaches clinical dental hygiene at Goodwin College and is a CPR faculty trainer for the Emergency Care Institute.
