By 2030, approximately 1 in 5 adults will be aged 65 and older. Around 60% of this demographic will have some form of periodontal disease (PD). More than 5 million will have Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have found that people with oral inflammation, such as periodontal disease have increased cognitive decline.  The participant will discover the potential role of p. gingivalis and the herpes virus in brain inflammation; evaluate the research showing how PD may increase risk and /or worsen dementias and cognitive decline; discuss the role PD therapy and good oral hygiene may have on brain health.
