While the best practices for implant maintenance are debatable, peri-implantitis remains a global concern, with much attention on the dental hygiene profession and its role in early disease detection and prevention. Dental implants are not teeth, but many existing therapies used to maintain and treat diseased implants are from traditional modalities used by hygienists in treating the diseased tissue of natural teeth. This program introduces the fundamentals of implant dentistry and will provide dental hygienists with a refreshed perspective on the dental hygiene process of implant care. The presentation will include interactive case presentations, polling, and discussions.

Educational Objectives:

  • Discuss the dental implant process of care
  • Understand etiologies of peri-implant disease
  • Recognize peri-implant disease and soft and hard tissue conditions
  • Identify implant parts and components
