Cultural Competency provides insight for the dental healthcare professional on unique verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Participants will be enlightened on how recognizing cues, which are often critical in healthcare decisions and values, impact the treatment and care of patients. This subject serves to promote team cohesiveness in regards to self-awareness, attitudes, beliefs, biases, and behaviors.  A variety of teaching methods to engage the participants will be used.

Course objectives: Upon course completion participants will:

  • recognize issues related to cultural competency and oral healthcare
  • define the benefits of providing culturally and verbally appropriate oral health care and treatment planning
  • implement appropriate practice management and effective communication strategies related to cultural competency
  • identify barriers to effective communication
  • articulate how effective communication skills and styles can affect the ability to promote culturally diverse oral health services and acceptance

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: The Impact on Dental Employees and Patients
This mandated course provides insight on how to identify physical, verbal and visual types of sexual harassment that can occur in the workplace. Discussion includes recognizing scenarios in which sexual harassment results from Quid Pro Quo or how harassment can create a hostile work environment. Inappropriate behaviors, conversations and comments among team members can also create an uncomfortable environment for patients and other personal affiliated with your practice.

It is a critical step for employers to have policies and posters on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace as well provide training for employees on how to recognize and report sexual harassment and understand the importance and protection provided to employees that adhere to guidelines.

Course Objectives:  Upon completion of this course participants will:

  • Recognize the signs of physical, verbal and visual sexual harassment
  • Be able to identify the difference scenarios relating to quid pro quo and hostile work environment
  • Gain insight into the need for establishing and adhering to office policies related to sexual harassment in the workplace.

Speaker:  Cathie Collier, RDH, B.Ed, MS, received her bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the Fones School at the University of Bridgeport and a master’s degree in Health and Healing.  Cathie is a national lecturer and frequent speaker for PLS on OSHA and Infection Control, HIPAA, Medical Emergencies, CPR and other topics. She is a clinical instructor at Goodwin College and Emergency Care Institute at Bridgeport Hospital.
