Cultural Competence: Addressing Health Care Disparities in the Dental Health Field

It is essential for the dental health care professional to identify issues that disuade people from seeking proper treatment and undermine commitment to their own care.  This need has caused a growing number of states (and health insurance providers) to mandate this subject matter for healthcare professionals once in a license monitoring cycle.

This *interactive on demand webinar provides the dental healthcare professional with insight to healthcare disparities and identify ways with which we can address patients concerns and encourage the need for effective treatment.

Participants will discover how to recognize the cues, critical in healthcare decisions and values, that impact the treatment and care of patients. This subject serves to promote team cohesiveness in regards to self-awareness, attitudes, beliefs, biases, and behaviors. A variety of teaching methods to engage the participants are used. Check with your state for requirements and CE credit acceptance.

Course objectives: Upon course completion participants will:

  1. Recognize issues related to cultural competency and oral healthcare
  2. Define the benefits of providing culturally and verbally appropriate oral health care and treatment planning
  3. Implement appropriate practice management and effective communication strategies related to cultural competency
  4. Identify barriers to effective communication
  5. Articulate how effective communication skills and styles can affect the ability to promote culturally diverse oral health services and acceptance

Speaker: Cathie Collier, RDH, B.Ed, MS, received her bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the Fones School at the University of Bridgeport, where she later served as DH Clinical Coordinator. Her master’s degree is in Health and Healing. She is a clinical instructor at Goodwin College and Emergency Care Institute at Bridgeport Hospital.
