New Requirements for Dental Assistants in Connecticut

T he world of dentistry is always evolving and changing with advancements in technology and procedures. These changes create new opportunities to learn through continuing education! The opportunities afforded by seeking out continuing education are much more beneficial to your career by staying ahead and learning more about dentistry. Dental continuing education makes that possible for dentists and dental hygienists to gain that edge and stay on top of all the new and changing aspects of dentistry.

Effective on July 1st, 2018, all Connecticut dental assistants or those planning to be, must show completion of the Dental Assisting National Boards Infection Control certification. Although the requirement is effective 7/1/18, assistants still can have nine months to get “on the job” training to prepare for the exam.

Current Connecticut dental assistants who have not passed the DANB Infection Control Exam prior to July 1, 2018 have until April 1, 2019 (nine months) to receive on the job training by a licensed dentist to prepare for and pass the exam.

New Connecticut dental assistants hired after July 1, 2018 have nine months from the start of employment to receive on the job training by a licensed dentist to prepare for and pass the exam, if they have not done so already.

Thereafter all dental assistants must complete a minimum of one hour of training or education in infection control every two years in a dental setting. No dental assistant after July 1st will be able to have more than 9 months of on-the-job training by a licensed dentist before taking the Infection Control exam. These changes will also affect all dental assistants who have earned the CDA certification before June 1, 1993, or the COA certification before June 1, 1994, who have not taken the exam in the meantime will have to take it before July 1st, 2018
