The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has published the official proceedings from the 2017 World Workshop on the “Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions”. These proceedings provide a comprehensive update to the previous disease classification established at the 1999 International Workshop for a Classification of Periodontal Diseases and Conditions.
This new staging and grading system provides a structure for treatment planning and monitoring a patient’s response to therapy. It’s a personalized approach to patient care, which is essential for effective perio case management. These two systems specifically guide a clinician’s treatment approaches, similarly to what is used in some fields of medicine. It provides a blueprint for developing a well-rounded treatment strategy based on a patient’s individual needs.
What’s even more exciting is the inclusion, for the first time, of a new classification for peri-implant diseases and conditions!
We anticipate that this AAP classification system will become the standard language for us to communicate professionally and also with other third parties like insurance companies. It is worthwhile and eventually will be necessary to incorporate it into your practices.
On Wed. April 24, 2019, PLS is hosting an all-day perio update and hands-on seminar, featuring Dr. Kesnia Baxter, periodontist, who will explain this new Classification System. You can register online now. Last year this class sold out quickly! In the meantime, you can visit the AAP website for more details.
